AN ISLAND INVADED BY RODENTS?

Ever wondered why a bustling suburb within the island of Penang has a name associated to rodents? With an abundance of good food available in every single nook and corner, I would not be surprised if a local were to exclaim that it was indeed due to a once upon-a-time invasion by Remy's kind.

During a recent trip to Penang, I took up a One Day 3 Meals challenge to seek good food for breakfast, lunch and dinner within the vicinity of Pulau Tikus suburb, without leaving the area. And boy, was I spoilt for choices! Here are my picks of must-haves if you happen to be in the vicinity.

BREAKFAST
Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng @ Seng Lee Cafe
Bangkok Lane
Opening hours: 08.00 - 18.30

First stop, Bangkok Lane. Undeniably, the best Mamak Mee Goreng in the country. The noodles are fried together with pieces of cucur udang and mashed potatoes in a secret concoction of prawn stock, chilli and tomato paste, which is later garnished with generous helpings of sotong and hard boiled egg. Bellissimo!

BREAKFAST
Apam Balik @ in front of Kedai Kopi
Swee Kong
Solok MoulmeinOpening hours: 07.00 - 12.00

A very popular Apam Balik stall, it is located across the road from the Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng stall, at the corner of Jalan Burmah - Solok Moulmein intersection. Here, it is not uncommon for customers to order by the half dozens. One way to avoid the long wait period would be to first place your order, have your breakfast somewhere nearby, and then collect your order after your breakfast. Cooked over charcoal fire, the pancake turns out to be deliciously crispy on the outsides and soft in the insides. For toppings, you have a choice of either white or brown sugar, sprinkled together with a pinch of blended peanuts. A dollop of creamy sweet corn kernels (optional) adds additional flavour to the pancakes.

LUNCH
Duck Egg Char Kueh Teow
329 Jalan Burmah
Opening hours: 10.00 - 1700

I usually order my Char Kueh Teow without eggs, not because of its bad reputation (regarding cholesterol), but because I don't like that eggy-mushy texture it adds to the dish. So it wouldn't have mattered to me if they were serving it with caviar. Nevertheless I decided to brave the crowd to check out this popular diner. There is a compulsory half hour (minimum) wait time during lunch hour but if you care to wait you will not be disappointed. I thought the result was close to being perfect - not too spicy and not too oily, not too wet and neither is it too dry, with just the right amounts of soy sauce blended into the chunky noodles.

DINNER
Chinese Fondue (Lok Lok) @ Pulau
Tikus MarketJalan Pasar
Opening hours: 17.00 - 01.00

If there ever is a Chinese equivalent to fast food, the Chinese Fondue (Lok Lok) would qualify hands-down. If you come alone or in a small party, you may end up dining with complete strangers. People come and go every 20 - 30 minutes, so not to worry should the person sitting next to you irk you with his bad table manners. In my opinion, the dips play a key role in a Chinese Fondue. Here at the Chinese Fondue stall in Pulau Tikus Market, they serve one of the better dips in town, with a selection of peanut sauce, spicy chilli sauce and plum sauce to pick from.

A 4D guide to the Chinese Fondue:

Decide - make your pick(s).
Dunk - stick your pick(s) into the hot pot.
Dip - dip your picks(s) into your favourite sauce(s).
Down - eat your pick(s).

THE KING AND I

When durian stalls (similar to the below) start to sprout up along the main road of Balik Pulau, it s plain as day that the much anticipated durian season has commenced in Penang. The durian season in Penang typically begins in mid of May and ends in mid of July.

I happened to be in town at the onset of the durian season this year and decided to pay a visit to the Bao Sheng Durian Farm. Pay a mere RM25 per pax and you get to savour the king of fruits to your hearts content. I was enticed to part with an additional RM10 to be in the company of some thorny celebrities like Red Prawn, Centipede, Water Gourd and many others. The buffet experience included an educational short tour of the orchard, led by Mr Chang Teik Seng himself.

Within his orchard, Mr Chang had even erected two fully equipped Durian Villas to entice the durian lovers to spend the night with nature for RM180 per villa per night. No points for guessing correctly what Bao Sheng will be serving for breakfast the next morning!

Bao Sheng Durian Farm (寶盛榴槤園)

Opening hours: 11.00am - 7.30pm.
Cuisine: N/A.
Must order: N/A
Must not order: N/A.
Budget for 4 pax: RM100 - M140.

My verdict: 3 stars.

PENANG - OTHER THAN HAWKER FOOD

IKAN BAKAR
Adnan Bin Jassan
Ikan Bakar & Nasi Lemak
Kampong Telok Tempoyak,
Jalan Telok Tempoyak, Penang.

A no frills and down-to-earth but excellent place for ikan bakar. It is nestled in the quiet fishing village of Kampong Teluk Tempoyak which is a short distance from Bayan Baru.

The fish here is marinated with delicious home-made spices, wrapped in leaves and then grilled over charcoal fire. You are invited to select the type and size of fish, kept alive in the plastic containers in front of the shop, for grilling. The choice of fishes are limited and is dependant on their supply for the day. On any given day, the typical fishes available are Siakap, Ikan Merah and Garoupa. Flower crabs (Ketam Bunga) and Prawns are also available.

I highly recommend trying the Siakap. While dining, you can also observe a continuous supply of live fish being brought to their stall. Due to the freshness, the meat is extremely succulent. The standard sauce dips are provided for those who require an extra "kick". This stall also sells nasi lemak which goes well with the ikan bakar. Calamari (deep fried sotong) which is available from a separate stall is also recommended. All these food goes down well with the large jugs of coconut juice or lime juice (with assam boi) that is available from the drinks stall.

Slightly pricey but worth your every single cent. Highly recommended if you are looking for a great seafood place in Penang, dining beside the sea with the breeze in your face. One of the best if not THE BEST, ikan bakar stall in the country!

SEAFOOD
Kedai Makanan Teik Seng
Lebuh Carnarvon, Penang.

Until a good friend recommended Teik Seng more than 12 years ago, I must admit that I wasn't aware that Penang has several seafood and meat dishes they can claim as truly their own.
Local favourites that I was introduced to then that remained my personal Northern favourites include Fried Roast Pork, Fried Baby La-La in Bean Paste, Assam Prawns and Belacan Fried Chicken.
When I recently returned to this eatery, I was delighted that their food is still par excellence although their prices have gone up somewhat.

If you have problems locating this place amongst the many one-way streets, just ask any Penangite about the restaurant with the chef who dons his trademark very tall toque blanche, and they should be able to give you ample directions to get here.

SEAFOOD
Restoran Makanan Laut Bagan Prawn Village
672, Bagan Bukit Tambun,
14100 Simpang Ampat, Penang.

Bagan Prawn Village is a seafood restaurant located on the mainland with a breath-taking view of the Jawi River.

I find the prices of seafood here much cheaper compared to their island counterparts.

The first people who greet you when you arrive, are the jaga kereta "boys and girls" - who are really residents living across the road, that demand RM2 for parking on "their land".

Then as you enter the restaurant, you will walk pass an assortment of live seafood. Meeting and greeting you here will be their captain, who will gladly give you a tour of the tanks while taking your order at the same time.

If you do dine here, try not to miss their live fishes and prawns, steamed and boiled respectively of course, to retain their natural sweetness. Another must try is their large mantis prawns which I favour (over prawns) for their sweeter and more succulent meat.

SEAFOOD
Hai Boey Seafood
29, MK 9, Pasir Belanda, Teluk Kumbar,
Bayan Lepas, Penang.

As their name suggests, Hai Boey is located at the southern tip of the island and faces the Straits of Malacca.

Despite being a distance away from Georgetown (45 minutes drive), this place is packed during the weekends. This is one of the rare restaurants I have come across that people actually form a line to pay for their meal!

Ask any captain that takes your order, and they will readily recommend a few of their house specialities.

They include a rather interesting Japanese style Fried Brinjal, Sour & Spicy Clams Soup, Steamed Tofu with Cendol and Chikong Pork Ribs, besides an array of seafood fare.

DIM SUM
Kedai Makanan Yee Heong
Lebuh Campbell, Penang.

Located towards the end of Lebuh Campbell, Yee Heong serves reasonably good and cheap dim sum.

Not surprising that this unassuming place can be rather crowded in the mornings as many of their dim sum still cost less than RM2 per plate.

I find their variety of dumplings rather good. Their loh mai kai is worth a shout too!

Atmah Winner's Dinner Treat In Advance - Intuition of Something Very Good Soon!

Ever had that "I kinda feel lucky today" feeling before? I believe that's what Claire had on that feeling-good day when her team won the Atmah Hunt! She must have felt something really good right after the hunt (before the dinner-prize presentation) and the confidence must have prompted her gesture of generousity and goodwill - "Skip the Atmah dinner, guys. Let me belanja everyone!"

And we loved her "treat-in-advance". It was an excellent place - for the food and the ambience and even the people who served us. Nice and friendly and accomodating "at a place my family name is honoured" - ATAWOO Thai Restaurant! The chefs were Thais - Claire checked!

We headed for this place right after Juru - fairly smoothly - no bothers from the bridge or subsequent traffic at all. Our hunger pangs grew as the distance left shortened.

The facade sported an attap fringe (it seems, ATAWOO means Attap House in Thai), and inside, the furniture was on top of some kind of raised wooden platform - homely and warm "kampung" feeling.

We had two fish dishes, two vegetables (brinjals and kai lan), a tomato-egg dish, tom-yam and a plate of prawns.
The View Before the Chew! Rub-a-tub-tub! Thank You For The Grub!

The Fiery, Creamy Seafood Tom Yam Loaded To The Brim!

The Innocent Looking Kai Lan - Ala Thai Style! Actually, spiked with Chili Padi!

Lots Of Steamy Rice - Free Flow!

The Garlic Prawns - An All-Time Favourite!

The Tomato-Omelette - something for the "non-meat" diner!

The "Star Attraction"!

The Saucy, Juicy Eggplants!

The eight of us enjoyed every one of them and left almost nothing on the plates!

The fish dishes were the best (sorry, forgot to take a picture of the 2nd fish dish before it was completely consumed) - those alone will make us come back again when we feel a Thai (tie?) day is going to happen. Yes, remember the results? 3 teams tied for the Atmah hunt! A post-hunt interview revealed that one has to "eat the fish head" to "stay ahead" too!

And we had refreshing rounds of the unique nutmeg drinks too! Authentic - slightly sweet - but you can ask them to make it to your liking - very accomodating.

We Had Two Rounds of the Tangy Nutmeg Drink!

Excellent Choices, and Thanks Claire! It was a wonderful dinner that we will all remember for a long, long time! I don't mind an intuitive day like this of my own someday soon! Guys, you too?

(The pictures don't do enough justice - they actually look a lot better live! Please excuse the amateurish effort!)
