GREAT MONTH FOR FOOD PERHAPS?

The answer is NO, if you're wondering whether my comrade has decided to hang-up her hunting boots and venture into the food business.

The Margaret referred to here used to be the chef de cuisine and owner of a very successful Yong Tau Foo outlet in Jalan Kuchai Lama, carrying a similar name. That was many years ago and today that popular outlet is no longer around as Margaret had hung up her woks.

This restaurant in Subang Perdana is a spin-off from the original outlet, and if I am not wrong, is run by one of Margaret's sons. Certainly not difficult to find, this outlet makes up one of the shoplots attached to the Good Year Court 9 apartments.

Here, they have upheld Margaret's trademark of producing larger-than-normal sized pieces of Yong Tau Foo and retained most of her winning recipes. The stuffings for the Yong Tau Foo is home-made, giving it that fresh succulent taste. The Yong Tau Foo pieces can be custom-picked from the standard assortment of white bean curd, ladies finger, red chilli, bitter gourd, aubergine, fish ball, tau foo puff and foo chuk, and is served in a bed of pleasant, oyster-flavoured light gravy, that goes very well with rice.

They have a number of other side dishes that complements well their star attraction including assam fish, paper-wrapped chicken, pork trotters in vinegar and off course, their own signature dish, the fried tau kan (fried bean curd skin that is stuffed with fish paste).

I found their paper-wrapped chicken to be a tad disappointing, being rather dry and bland. Nevertheless the rest of their offerings made up for this isolated letdown.

When You Feel You Need Something Healthy & Light

I have not have the best of health lately and in times like this, I always look forward to clear, soupy and light meals and I go to places like this one in Subang Jaya (where else, but where I live!).

Here is one place that I will recommend highly if you want truly clear and light soupy meals. The Restoran Tien Kee - Soup & Porridge (will add a picture of shopfront later).

Serving mostly fish (prompret, ikan parang, etc) with noodles in clear broth, they also have other food for those who prefer a little more.

Prices ranges from Rm6.50 to RM31.00 (with abalone) - but most are within the RM8.00 to RM11.00 range - per big bowl of noodles served with taufu, fresh greens (mak choy, bitter gourd), some mushrooms, tomatoes, savoured with unique dried shrimps and preserved vegetables. You will be tempted to finish every drop of the clear and tasty soup.

Choices of noodles include mee suah(my favourite), tong-fung (glass noodles), mee-hoong, yellow noodles and kuey-teow. They also serve steamed rice, yam rice (on certain days) and long bean rice and even porridge. The speciality rice ranges from RM1.80 to RM2.00 a bowl.

You can vary your order to your liking too, down to what you want added or not included ... just ask. Very accommodating.

For those into the meats - they have their signature fritters, hakka dumplings and abacus "discs" (another kind of dumpling that look like abacus beads). They also serve duck meat.

Run by a family of siblings (Raymond, Jacyln and Michael - they speak English too) - they have been receiving good patronage - often crowded by 7:30 p.m. and finished selling most of their popular dishes by 9:00 pm. (though they officially open until 10:00).

I know it is not "proper" to talk about this along with any discussions of food - but I cannot not mention about the impressive level of hygiene at this place - the toilets - exceptionally clean and bright! I am inclined to say - the best I have ever seen in any restaurant of this class (shop-house type).

Cleanliness seems to be the "visionary focus" of the owners.

Traditional Yong Tau Foo

If anyone is hunting for a place that serves traditional Yong Tau Foo - pork fillings and all, then this place, Restoran Family Yong Tau Foo, serves one of the better ones in this part of the world (if the medium to large crowd size is anything to go by). Each piece is RM0.90.

It is on the oilier side but I guess that's what makes the flavour. They also serve Hakka Yam Meat (RM15).

I have not tried it personally, but others who have, recommend it.

Clearly The Lightest BKT Soup In Town!

This place serves a very light and clear soup, yet tasty version of BKT. Prices range from RM6.00 to RM8.00 per bowl. Besides the usual meat and entrails, there are tau-foo pok, needle mushrooms, button mushrooms, yow-char-kwai and green vegetables served. Rice is however limited to plain rice - no yam rice.

Like most BKT shops - they rest on Mondays.

I believe this place appeals to those who have health challenges but cannot resist the taste of BKT (my 5-cent theory!). Even a "Fish-Egg-Vegetarian" like me patronises it from time to time! So does my family doctor!

Towards the evening, tables are set up on the roadside to cater for the crowd.

Would You Queue For This Pan-Mee?

Many don't mind - served only during breakfast and lunch. They are often sold out before the lunch hours run out. Average wait time : 30 minutes. (My picture does not do justice - will try to get a better one later).

Many say that this is tastier than most - with the batter texture being "perfect" and the soup is "you want to finish every drop". It is served with pork - so I guess that makes a difference.

The owner is an elderly "auntie" but it is now mostly run by her son (red cap) and helpers. She will be there during the peak hours.

Worth trying at least once - when you have all the time in the world and in no hurry to go anywhere else!

While you are there - try the fresh sugar cane and fresh young coconut! The hubby serves those.

Take Away And Make Illegal Demands Here!

The place : Restoran BnY Chinese Cooking & Steamboat - not a very creative name - but probably belongs to a loving couple and made from their names (curiosity will eventually reveal their names!) and serves Shanghainese food.
If anyone is keen to try Shanghainese food, there's one in our community.
SJ (and Ulu SJ) do have great choices, don't we! I have tried the food twice here and I intend to visit again - it still has quite a number of interesting food on its menu. Reasonable prices too.

Ask for their truly Shanghainese fish - re-stuffed and boneless.
Even their "Tomatoes in Eggs" is done their style.
